Overview of Bluetooth Enhancements

Where to begin?

Using a probe either with a wireless or wired link, Boson supports several ways to gather meter readings. Not all methods have to be used.

Here are some of the variations which can be chosen:

Initial Setup vs. Usage

The setup for the probe is simple. It should not require changes very often. It is advisable to write down the settings within the setup area after the handheld and probe are working well together. The configuration is backed up after each Hotsync session. However, sometimes users make changes to the setup accidentally or try various settings to resolve a problem. Each handheld's configuration in the field is setup in the handheld. Other settings controlled by the office are setup in BosonDT on the main desktop computer

If you are a user and simply want to use Boson to read the meters, jump to the Entry, Probe or Offline Usage sections to begin usage. If you are setting a probe and handheld combination, jump to the Setup area.

Overview of Setup

The setup procedure must be completed for each handheld. The configuration of how handheld connects to the probe will vary. So the settings are maintained in the handheld rather than the central BosonDT program on the desktop computer. Bluetooth probes have their own unique 12 character address. This address will be configured in the probe setup form. A handheld cannot connect to more than 1 probe(s) at the same time and more than 1 handheld(s) cannot connect to the same probe.

The Bluetooth setup is accessed within Boson by tapping the menu button and choosing Probe Settings.

Overview of Usage

The probe can be used either in the ENTRY form or the PROBE form. The key difference between the input methods is the PROBE form allows the readings to be gathered in random order. This also means the PROBE form can be used to download stored readings fromt he probe in any order. The PROBE form should only be used to transfer stored readings from the probe. The reads come come in any any order. The PROBE form is designed to accept readings in any order.

If the the download of readings were to be done in the ENTRY form, they readings would have to be transferred exactly as the route dictates. The ENTRY form will discard a reading unless it is for the meter being shown on the screen.
